This wonderfully surreal 1973 Frank Zappa concert poster advertises Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention appearing at the Musikhalle in Hamburg, Germany, on Thursday, September 6, with British progressive rock band Nektar appearing as special guests.

Presented by Mama Concerts, the poster is an extraordinary example of early-1970s European rock concert design. Rather than relying on a conventional photograph of the performers, the designer created a bizarre collage centred around an enormous black-and-white image of Zappa. Victorian-style figures, flowers, ornamental decorations and an oversized mousetrap surround his face, producing exactly the sort of strange, irreverent visual language that seems perfectly suited to Zappa’s music.

The huge FRANK ZAPPA typography across the top ensures that the artist’s name dominates the design, while the comparatively restrained black lettering contrasts brilliantly with the elaborate photographic collage underneath.

The concert took place during an especially creative period in Zappa’s career.
