Parade 1974 Jacques Tati French Cinema Wall Art

A wonderfully expressive French poster for Jacques Tati’s 1974 film Parade, combining the worlds of cinema, circus and graphic art in a remarkably simple and playful composition.

The poster depicts a collection of performers through loose, gestural dark-blue brushstrokes, reducing the human figures to energetic silhouettes. Rather than attempting realistic representation, the artwork captures movement — performers bending, balancing and gesturing across the page.

Above them, PARADE is written in wonderfully irregular multicoloured lettering, with each character appearing almost individually painted. Beneath the illustration appears the simple French credit:

Released in 1974, Parade was one of Tati’s most unusual works, blending circus performance, comedy and audience participation. Tati himself appears as a ringmaster-like figure within the production.

The poster reflects that playful approach beautifully. A pale blue field transitions through white into a brilliant horizontal band of red, while the sparse blue figures give the artwork an unmistakably European modernist quality.

Its combination of expressive drawing, unconventional typography and large areas of colour makes this much more than conventional movie advertising. It works equally well as a piece of 1970s French graphic design.
