Bruce Springsteen at the Capitol Theatre 1978: A Classic Piece of New Jersey Rock History

Few concert posters capture the atmosphere of late-1970s American rock quite like this striking Bruce Springsteen Capitol Theatre poster from 1978. Advertising three performances in Passaic, New Jersey, the design combines dramatic black-and-white illustration with simple typography to create a poster that feels every bit as powerful today as it did during one of the most important periods of Springsteen’s career.

The poster announces “John Scher proudly presents Bruce Springsteen at the Capitol Theater – September 19, 20 & 21, 1978.” These concerts took place during Springsteen’s celebrated Darkness on the Edge of Town era, when he and the E Street Band were building an extraordinary reputation as one of America’s great live rock acts.

Rather than relying on a conventional photograph of Springsteen, the artist created a dramatic illustrated night scene. There is very little unnecessary decoration. Instead, the contrast between the black ink and pale background creates an image that demands attention from across a room.
