A wonderfully bold example of early 1980s concert advertising, this vintage poster promotes Elvis Costello and the Attractions appearing at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles on Tuesday, December 29, 1981.

The poster strips concert advertising down to its essentials. Against a vivid turquoise background, enormous black typography announces ELVIS COSTELLO and the ATTRACTIONS, followed simply by the date and venue. There are no photographs, illustrations or elaborate graphics competing for attention. The typography itself becomes the artwork.

The concert was promoted by Wolf & Rissmiller alongside influential Los Angeles radio station KROQ, a station that would become closely associated with alternative and new wave music in Southern California. The poster therefore captures not only a particular Elvis Costello performance but also the visual culture surrounding the developing alternative music scene of the early 1980s.

By 1981, Elvis Costello and the Attractions had already established themselves as one of the most distinctive acts to emerge from Britain’s late-1970s new wave movement. Their combination of rock, punk energy, pop songwriting and sharp lyrical style produced a catalogue that remains hugely influential.

The beautifully uncomplicated design makes this poster especially effective as contemporary wall art. Its turquoise, black and white colour scheme looks remarkably modern despite its vintage origins.
