Late-1960s San Francisco music history, this vintage concert poster advertises The Velvet Underground and Tim Buckley at the Avalon Ballroom on July 19, 20 and 21, 1968.

The extraordinary bill also includes All Men Joy and Jerry Abrams Headlights, placing the poster firmly within the experimental counterculture and psychedelic music scene that flourished in San Francisco during the period.

Visually, this is a particularly unusual concert design. Rather than relying on the swirling multicoloured patterns normally associated with 1960s psychedelic posters, it combines a mysterious black-and-white woodland photograph with an intensely vivid magenta background. Gothic black lettering announces the performers beneath the photograph, creating an atmospheric design that feels simultaneously psychedelic, romantic and slightly surreal.

The photograph is credited on the poster to Paul Kagan, while the event took place at the legendary Avalon Ballroom at Sutter and Van Ness in San Francisco. The Avalon became one of the defining venues of the city’s 1960s music scene and was closely associated with the Family Dog concert series and the remarkable poster art that accompanied it.

The pairing of The Velvet Underground and Tim Buckley also makes this an especially fascinating historical concert bill. Both would become hugely influential, although their music followed very different paths through the rapidly changing sounds of the late 1960s.
