This wonderfully atmospheric 1968 Avalon Ballroom concert poster advertises a four-night San Francisco appearance by Spirit, the Sir Douglas Quintet and Notes From The Underground, held on August 2, 3, 4 and 5 at the legendary Avalon Ballroom.

Produced as part of the Family Dog concert series, the poster is identified as FD-134 and captures a quieter, more mysterious side of late-1960s psychedelic poster design. Instead of the explosive colours normally associated with San Francisco’s psychedelic era, the artwork uses a beautifully restrained sepia and cream palette.

A ghostly central figure dominates the design, arms raised beneath the elongated Spirit lettering. The deliberately grainy photographic treatment gives the image an almost dreamlike quality, while the exceptionally thin, hand-drawn lettering across the lower section provides the unmistakable visual character of the underground poster movement.

The concert brought together several very different strands of late-1960s American music. Spirit were emerging as one of the era’s distinctive psychedelic rock groups, while the Sir Douglas Quintet brought their celebrated blend of rock, blues, country and Tex-Mex influences. San Francisco’s Notes From The Underground completed the bill.

The bottom of the poster announces the Avalon Ballroom at Sutter and Van Ness in San Francisco, one of the most important venues associated with the city’s counterculture and psychedelic music scene.

Its understated colouring makes this an especially attractive piece of vintage music wall art. The warm sepia tones work beautifully in a music room, living room, home office, studio or mid-century interior without overwhelming the surrounding décor.
