About Space Shuttle Atlantis
Space Shuttle Atlantis, a prominent symbol of NASA’s Space Shuttle program, was one of the most iconic and storied spacecraft in human spaceflight history. Built by the Rockwell International company, Atlantis was NASA’s fourth operational orbiter and played a crucial role in shaping the course of space exploration.
Atlantis embarked on its maiden voyage on October 3, 1985, marking the beginning of its remarkable journey. Over its 33 missions, Atlantis carried out a wide range of missions, including deploying satellites, conducting scientific research, and assembling the International Space Station (ISS). Notably, it carried the Magellan probe to Venus and the Galileo spacecraft to Jupiter.
Perhaps most famously, Atlantis was the orbiter chosen for the final mission of the Space Shuttle program, STS-135, in July 2011. This marked the end of an era for NASA’s shuttle program.
Atlantis was celebrated not only for its technical achievements but also for its role in advancing scientific knowledge and international cooperation in space exploration. Its sleek design and robust capabilities made it a workhorse of space missions.
After its retirement, Atlantis found its permanent home at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. As a revered exhibit, it allows visitors to witness the marvels of human spaceflight up close and serves as a reminder of the accomplishments and ambitions of the Space Shuttle program.
